STAFF at a Barnsley firm of accountants are unlikely to return to their office for at least three months until damage caused by a fire is repaired.
The GBAC building in Shambles Street, parts of which date back 300 years, lost most of its roof in the fire last Thursday.
Staff in the building were unaware there was a fire until Neil Pickering, who works as a fitter at the National Tyres depot next door, raised the alarm.
Neil became aware something was wrong when crowds of people began to gather in Shambles Street looking towards the GBAC building and pointing.
He then went outside and saw the smoke before raising the alarm.
More than 30 staff were then able to evacuate the building just minutes before the roof caved in.
Owner Geoff Britton said the fire was caused by a faulty fan in the ladies’ toilet.
