A NEW town centre manager has been appointed to keep Barnsley 'open for business' while redevelopment takes place.

Garreth Bruff, the son of Coun Margaret Bruff, will start the job in September and he says he is proud and excited.

He said: "The real priority is managing the next 12 months. We have got £380m of investment coming in and by 2011 the new markets open.

"I want to make sure businesses thrive now because otherwise people can fall out of the habit of using the town centre. There is lots happening and a real sense of direction and purpose. I will make sure we keep Barnsley open for business."

Garreth, 37, grew up in Barnsley and went to Honeywell school and Barnsley College. He says it is a privilege to manage the town centre.
