THE future of 13 school bus services which carry more than 1,100 pupils to and from Barnsley schools every day has been thrown into doubt after a bus company announced it will be closing for good this summer.

BrightBus, which operates a fleet of green double decker buses, runs services to and from six schools across the Barnsley area, carrying abut 1,120 pupils per day in total.

Managing director of the North Anston-based firm Mick Strafford said he will close the company in July with the loss of all 90 staff. He said the time was right to ‘call it a day’ after 12 months of deteriorating health.

He said he would work with schools and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to try and help find alternative providers and secure jobs for his staff.
