FED up Thurnscoe pensioner Mavis Brady has collected 513 signatures on a petition calling for a regular bus service to Mexborough and the reinstatement of the number 70 'Nipper'.

Mavis, 75, of Kingsway has won vital backing of people who attend The Embankment Centre and claims people on free bus passes would pay if they got a more convenient service.

She said: “I get a concessionary fare but I’m sure that most people would be willing to pay 50p to be able to get to Mexborough. We really must try our best to get the bus back.

“The 203 Wilfreda service to Mexborough runs only every two hours in the morning and at 5pm so I don’t know how they expect us to get to the hospital for appointments and visiting when we don’t have a car. The No 70 Nipper was perfect and we would like it back.”

Mike Power, commercial manager of Stagecoach, said that the No 70 was withdrawn through lack of use and a decision would have to be made by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.
