BARNSLEY Civic Trust has announced the winners of its first shop awards competition.
This is one of the first schemes to be run by the new trust and is intended to help improve the look of the town centre.
Eightyone town centre shops and businesses entered the seven categories.
The winners each receive a trophy and the highly commended entries a certificate.
The category winners: small shops - Keegan Sports, Doncaster Road; women’s fashion - Jujo, Regent Street South; men’s fashion - Boardwalk, Eldon Street; travel agents - Ilkeston Co-op Travel, May Day Green; cafes and take-aways - Tilly’s Café, New Street; charity shops - British Heart Foundation, Market Street; public houses - Yates’s, Shambles Street.
Treasurer Cath Wilkinson said: “It was very hard to choose the winners in the end as the standard of entries was so high.
“It proves that Barnsley has many shops to be proud of, and it proves that town centre businesses are raising their game.
“We hope that the awards will help to show people what Barnsley has to offer, and encourage them to use their town centre.”
