HIGHGATE day centre has been given a reprieve by the council and health bosses who wanted to shut it to save money.

A report recommending the U-turn has been obtained by the Chronicle and the news has been greeted with delight in Goldthorpe.

Arnold Dennison of Thurnscoe is overjoyed the place he has been visiting twice a week for the last ten years will still be there for him and his friends.

He said: “This is great news for us”.

The report will go before the Joint Agency Group on Monday and it is understood there will be no opposition from the JAG board, made up of the council and health bosses who control the town’s adult services.

But it provides bad news for campaigners in the rest of the borough because the last four council care homes and two day centres will be axed - despite massive public opposition.

Green Park House at Penistone and Oakwood at Royston will shut and have their day care provision ‘relocated’.

Highfield Grange at Wombwell and Mapplewell’s Greenside House will close and be reopened as respite and convalescence centres but retain day care.
