THESE mysterious engraved stones have got walkers wondering what they could 'B'.
Neil Morris, of Cortworth Place, Elsecar, spotted them while out with his wife near Lowe Wood, Stainborough.
He was following a council walking guide but the booklet made no mention of the stones - which bear an engraved 'B'. Nobody at Barnsley Council's countryside department was aware of them and members of Stainborough Parish Council are equally puzzled.
Coun Christine Guest, of Lowe Lane, Stainborough, said there were three stones.
"I have seen them and thought they must be some kind of boundary stone. They might have been something to do with the old railway or pit."
Another parish councillor, Sam Lockwood-Dukes, of Round Green Lane, said: "I cannot see them being boundary stones."
He says the boundary between Stainborough and Dodworth is marked by a dike.
