A PRIVATE road is to be resurfaced by the council using nearly £15,000 from a community support fund.
The application to resurface Park View Road in Staincross was approved at the Darton and Dodworth area forum on February 11 after councillors acknowledged residents' requests to improve it.
However, as the road has not been adopted it is not Barnsley council's responsibility to maintain or improve. The work will cost £14,955 and the money will come from the forum's community support fund, a public pot of cash normally used to finance funding applications from local community groups.
Residents requested the council pay for the scheme because the road is used regularly by members of the public, council vehicles and refuse trucks.
One resident, who does not want to be named, has lived on the road for over 30 years and said he would be happy to see it left as a private road.
He said: "The people who moved here in the last few years knew what they were buying when they moved in.
"They knew it was a private road and it doesn't take a lot of work to maintain it and tidy it up yourself."
