A CHURCH rescued by English Heritage from demolition has been used to spearhead a campaign to save others in Yorkshire.
St John and St Mary Magdalene, Goldthorpe, was saved from demolition by a £1m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £200,000 raised by the local community over ten years.
Maddy Jago, English Heritage's regional director for planning and development, said: "It is an inspiring example of the clergy and the congregation working with the wider community. There doesn't seem to be much awareness the responsibility for the upkeep of churches lies within the congregation."
