ABOUT 70 jobs could be created when Wilkinsons opens its store on Wombwell High Street in a few weeks.

The firm has spent thousands renovating the store since taking over from the Co-op a few months ago.

Wilkinsons announced this week it's opening 25 stores across the UK and that the Wombwell store is expected to be operating by August. A spokesman said he was delighted the jobs had been secured and said the firm was committed to high street developments.

But Coun Dick Wraith said there were concerns the move could shut other DIY stores on the High Street.

He added: "It's good news that jobs are coming in but we'll have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully it won't lead to job losses. Anything's better than how the town is now though and it desperately needs sorting out."
