BOGUS police officers stopped a lorry driver on the motorway and stole his wagon and £250,000 load of mobile phones.

The truck was stopped by three men in a white Volvo estate car which had blue flashing lights and displayed a sign in the rear windscreen saying, "Police - follow me."

When the driver saw the vehicle he pulled over on the hard shoulder on the southbound exit sliproad at junction 36 of the M1 at Tankersley.

The men claimed to be police officers and were wearing jackets saying 'police' on the front and back. They sat the lorry driver, aged 35, of West Yorkshire, in the Volvo before driving away and stealing the Mercedes articulated lorry and its load.

Later the same night - Tuesday, June 15 - the truck was found abandoned and on fire in Doncaster. The Volvo T5 was found burnt out just off the A628 Woodhead Pass on the road leading to Holmfirth and the lorry driver was found tied to a gate nearby.
