SOUTH Yorkshire Police have been helping to tackle burglary across Barnsley with a data-led approach.

A new dedicated patrol plan has been developed, which sees more officers in and around identified burglary hotspot areas.

The plans are built using recent offending data, with officers looking at possible trends and methods used by offenders.

Patrols are then developed around the data gathered, with both plain clothed and highly-visible operations being put in place.

Last Friday morning, officers had reports of multiple burglaries and thefts happening around the centre of the town, which were suspected to have been committed by the same person.

Reece Taylor, 25, of Wilkinson Street, was found hiding behind an outside self-service launderette.

He was handed a 32-week prison sentence on Monday at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to three counts of burglary, one count of theft and one count of fraud by false representation.

A police spokesperson said: “While our officers are working hard to tackle burglary, there are a few simple steps you can take to make your home more secure.

“Ensure all doors are locked and windows are closed when you are out the house, even if you’re just nipping to the shops.

“Consider asking a neighbour to keep an eye on your property if you are going on holiday or leaving it for an extended a period of time.”
