THE former Barnsley Road Methodist Church at Wombwell is set to be converted into 11 or 12 luxury apartments.

Watford, the Wombwell builders, will carry out the scheme on behalf of an Irish property investor.

A spokesman for Watford Ltd said a start on the scheme depended on the credit crunch. "It may be three or four weeks or three to four months," he said. " It all depends on when the developer pushes the button."

He said it was 'a fabulous building' and on completion it would be a building "that the company and Wombwell would be proud of."

The company has erected a fence to prevent further vandalism and avoid any injuries, since part of the ground floor is rotten and there is a danger an intruder could fall through.

The church's character and noted spire are to be retained and the latter could be turned into a second bedroom in one of the apartments.
