THOUSANDS of council workers went on strike this week in a pay dispute which hit services and closed schools.
Unison members downed tools on Wednesday and yesterday to object to what they say is a derisory pay increase.
School cooks, dinner ladies, classroom assistants and caretakers were among those who walked out and schools could not operate without them. All of the borough's secondary schools were shut, except the Academy at Worsbrough which is not run by the council.
At Kirk Balk, Hoyland, about 40 teachers joined their colleagues on the picket line and had a collection for the strikers.
