RESIDENTS have been given £7,000 compensation after a massive power surge caused fires and wrecked electrical items in ten homes on a Wath cul-de-sac.

It caused a four feet high fire in Anne Fairham's home and the boiler, shower, computer and many other items were ruined at a cost of over £4,000.

A new central heating system and washing machine installed in Peter Turnbull's house just two weeks before the incident was ruined leaving him £2, 900 out of pocket.

Anne said: "Everything started banging and exploding. Everybody was coming out on the street. Then I smelled burning in the house. I opened the door to the kitchen and there was a four foot high fire in the corner. It came from the socket.

“If we had been out or in bed when it happened the fire would have taken hold. They ought to think themselves lucky that out of 10 households affected nobody has been seriously injured or even worse killed.”

She added the fight for compensation had been frustrating but they weren't prepared to give up.
