CAMPAIGNS to try to save rural post offices in the Dearne are gathering pace.

Public meetings and protests have been taking place over recent weeks as villagers battle to save what they call the heart of their communities.

Supporters of Clayton post office, which has been serving the village for over 120 years and has won four awards, staged a public meeting on Tuesday which packed the village hall.

The consultation period ends on Monday and campaigners now hope they have done enough to convince the Post Office Ltd they should be given a reprieve.

Resident Linda Grainger said: "The meeting went well and the community got all their comments over and their arguments covered all the criteria the Post Office is trying to close it on.

"But it is the outcome that will prove whether the meeting was successful. We also have a shop as well so the retired and elderly would be completely cut off."
