ANGRY residents in Brierley fear the building of 40 houses in Brierley could destroy the appearance and character of the village.

The plans were approved at a planning meeting on Tuesday, despite most of the site, Lilac Garage, off Church Street, being in a conservation area and designated as green space.

Barratt (Northern)/Richard Ryder Partnership has been given permission to demolish a bungalow and Shirley and Lawrence Pritchard, whose home on Church Street overlooks the site, objected.

Shirley, 74, said: "It's the type of houses they want to build that is the problem. They don't fit in with the stonework and it's in green space. Soon there won't be any green space left."
