A BARNSLEY woman has become the 1000th in the town to be fined after dropping a cigarette stub.

Vicky Summerville, of Racecommon Road, was spotted littering in Peel Square and issued with a £75 fixed penalty notice by the council's environmental regulatory unit.

The ERU was set up in 2003 to tackle environmental crimes such as fly tipping, not clearing up dog fouling, dropping litter and fly posting. It has the power to issue fixed penalty notices for any of those offences, as well as further powers to take cases to court.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman for environmental services, believes the council’s role in punishing enviro-criminals is working.

“I am sure that our tough action is applauded by the vast majority, but for the thousand issued with fixed penalties, I hope they learn their lesson.

“We have fined a thousand people: I hope we don’t have to fine a thousand more before people get the message.”
