A VILLAGE club may have to close after apparently breaking a tenancy agreement established in 1928.
Members of Darfield Village Club, owned by Sam Smith's Brewery, have been told they must vacate the premises after selling rival brands, Fosters and John Smiths.
The agreement stated that as long as the club sold only Sam Smith's ale they could rent the premises at £1,600 per annum.
Since the agreement was broken in December, the rent has rocketed to £19,000, which the 500+ member club cannot afford.
Local councillor Trevor Smith said it would be a disaster for Darfield. "There are several legion groups that meet there; the senior scouts and the fellowship of services also use it."
Sam Smiths were not available for comment.
