AN eight-year-old boy from Royston has uncovered a time capsule from 1925 in the Co-operative foundation stone in Havercroft.

Louis Winter, of Lund Hill, found the glass bottle in an alcove after his dad was asked to move the stone, part of the former Co-operative building on Cow Lane.

The parish council said the stone was unsafe.

The bottle contained a Barnsley Chronicle and Barnsley Independent ( then a paid for weekly), several coins and postage stamps, a poster advertising the laying of the Co-operative stone, a copy of Wheatsheaf (the Co-operative newsletter), a balance sheet, a copy of the society's rules, a list of branches and a death benefits circular.

Louis said: “I was a bit shocked when I found it, I have never found anything like that before but I have heard about them. All the things are different to what we have got now but the coins are my favourite.”
