ONE of the last pubs to be built in Wombwell is to be demolished to make way for housing, if a planning application is successful.
The Countryman was opened in the late 1960s and is managed by Punch Taverns.
If the application is approved it will be knocked down and 12 houses built there - ten three bedroomed and two two bedroomed houses.
Private gardens and a car park consisting of 18 spaces have also been proposed.
A spokesman for Punch Taverns said: "We are not in the business of closing pubs and we will not normally consider the redevelopment of a site if it involves the loss of a pub.
"In this case, owing to poor trading conditions, local demographics and a shift in the pub market The Countryman would be likely to close in the coming months."
