PETER Whitehead spent many happy hours in Locke Park as a youngster.
He lived near the park and he and his family and friends made their way there at every opportunity, particularly during the long summer holidays. "It was really lovely with wonderful flower beds and it attracted thousands of people at the weekends and on summer evenings in those days.
"Around the tower there were 28 ornamental seats and people would meet friends there."
Peter is so keen to place on record the park in its heyday, he is considering writing a book about his and other people's memories or, alternatively, setting up an exhibition.
"I am sure there must be many people in Barnsley and the surrounding districts who have photographs, particularlly coloured ones, or colour slides which they still have of the park."
He would like to hear people's stories of their time spent at the park, at special events or family outings etc.
"As travel becomes more expensive people will start flocking to places such as Locke Park again. I hope so, because it's a lovely place."
