COUNCIL staff who take too much time off work will not get their annual pay increases under new rules introduced on Wednesday.

The changes to the increment payments, where workers move up their pay grade year on year, were only outlined in an email sent out on Monday.

Angry staff told the Chronicle it doesn't matter how hard they work, it's simply a matter of turning up. One member of staff who did not want to be named said: "Everybody who has worked their balls off, been here every hour God sends and done everything they were asked to do, will not get their incremental pay increase this year."

Senior councillor Mike Stokes said he felt it is potentially an 'illegal deduction from wages' to deprive some workers of expected rises.

Leader Coun Steve Houghton said the changes are not illegall.
