NEARLY 70 years ago Vincent Herbert Jones was one of the winners in a national poster competition.

National Savings was running the competition to find a slogan to encourage people to save.

The idea was that it would help the Second World War effort. All schools in the country were invited to take part.

Ten year-old Herbert, as he was known, was a pupil at Holy Rood school, and was one of the many youngsters who submitted an entry.

He came up with the novel idea for his poster after seeing an ice-cream bike being ridden around the streets which had the slogan on the front: 'Stop Me and Buy One'.

Herbert decided to reverse this and his slogan became 'Buy Me and Stop One'. In other words, buy a British ship to sink a German U-boat.

To his delight, his entry came out top of all the entrants in Barnsley. All the posters were displayed in the former Wilson's shop on Eldon Street.

This was around 1940 and Herbert still has the poster which is in good condition.
