THE father of an army captain who died after being injured by a bomb blast in Afghanistan has spoken of the agony of losing his 'wonderful' son.

Cpt Martin Driver, 31, from 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, was injured in Musa Qal'ah in Helmand province on February 21.

He died at Selly Oak Hospital late on Monday surrounded by his family, who had kept a three-week bedside vigil.

John Driver, 72, of Crosby Street, Cudworth, said his wife Glenys, 69, Martin's twin brother David, a doctor, and his girlfriend of two years Jo Selway, of Caerphilly, Wales, were devastated.

Mrs Driver was too distressed to talk but Mr Driver said: "We were just there to try to support Martin but his injuries were so bad it was almost impossible to save him. We were just glad of the extra time with him."
