FOUR meerkats have swopped the desert for Worsbrough.

The animals are normally found in the Kalahari, Botswana, or in South Africa but Wigfield Farm has added them to its menagerie.

They were delivered two weeks ago and have settled in to a desert enclosure created by students at the Barnsley College farm over the summer. Those who helped were Sophie Badger, 17, Sammy Woodward, 19, Hayley Edward, 18, Carolanne Grundy, 20 and Jessica Budd, 23.

Sophie said: "We came in, built a wall and a rest area for them and put the sand down." Different groups of students take turns to look after the animals - three brothers and an unrelated female that cost about £2,500.

Carolanne said: "It's unusual to work with them. Hopefully it is a good attraction for the public."
