A traffic island to protect a Monk Bretton monument has been given the go ahead.

An island around the butter cross, on the corner of Cross Street and High Street, is to be built to protect it from passing traffic.

The scheme, costing £106,000, will also see the road junction widened.

The butter cross dates back to the 13th century and was moved to its current location in the 1800s.

It was built by monks from Monk Bretton Priory as a place where they could preach to villagers from.

In recent years buses and larger vehicles have been using the wrong side of the road to get past the cross, but some have also clipped and damaged it.
