The council is in negotiations over proposals for a supermarket on site of Gala Bingo on the edge of the town centre.
And Sainsbury's has told the Chronicle it is eager to open a main food store in the town.
The Chronicle understands the council is in talks with retailers about the 4,645-square metre Gala Bingo and adjoining former YEB site, next to the interchange.
It comes despite plans announced by the Peel Group for a £25m store less than a quarter of a mile away, on Twibell Street.
