The battle to save Royston fire station has been lost - after fire authority members voted to close it.

Members have been locked in talks this morning at the Joint Secretariat, Regent Street. Despite being met by objectors, including members of the Fire Brigades' Union, the authority ruled the station will close on December 31 this year.

Residents, councillors and MP Dan Jarvis have been involved in the campaign to save the retained station, claiming that to close it would put lives at risk. But the authority meeting was told the new station at Cudworth would provide 'more than adequate' cover.

All members, apart from Coun Paul Scriven, from Sheffield, voted in favour of the closure. Coun Scriven abstained.
