FUNDING has been applied in order to secure safer cladding after a fire forced dozens of residents to be evacuated from their town centre flats last week.
Around 30 firefighters were called to the Skyline Flats, on Heelis Street, shortly after 8am last Sunday morning.
Residents in the flats were evacuated while the crews tackled the blaze.
The accidental fire involved the external cladding on the building and luckily there were no reports of any casualties.
The Chronicle can reveal that funding has now been applied for ‘cladding safety’.
Coun Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “We have been working with the property manager, residents and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to provide support following the fire on May 25.
“The building manager has applied for cladding safety funding from the government to replace the external cladding system.
“The cause of the fire remains unconfirmed at this time and is still under investigation by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.
“We will continue to provide support and assistance where required.”(
