TRAFFIC at one of Barnsley’s most notorious bottlenecks is set to be alleviated thanks to a multi-million pound plan to reduce congestion.
Barnsley Council has submitted a business case to the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), requesting £2m for improvements at Cundy Cross.
According to a report, the junction where Grange Lane meets Pontefract Road is operating ‘over its capacity’ and the Chronicle understands that the cash will be spent on reconfiguring its entry and exit lanes.
The pedestrian island near Priory Campus will also be removed in order to create a two-lane approach, while traffic lights at the junction of Rotherham Road and Meadow View will be axed.
The work - if approved by SYMCA at a meeting next week - could start as soon as July and it is expected to take about four months to complete.
Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, told the Chronicle: “Our plans to improve the Cundy Cross junction and several of its entry and exit lanes is an important project to support regeneration and tackle road traffic congestion to improve bus journey times on Pontefract Road.”
