PENISTONE teenager Graihagh Turner finished as second under 19 girl at the Inter-Counties Championships.
She was representing Yorkshire who she helped to victory in the team category at the race which was also the Clougha Pike FRA.
The result adds to an stellar season for Graihagh who has just returned from representing Great Britain under 18s at the Mountain Running Cup in Slovakia.
At the Norman Cole Penistone 10k on the Trans-Pennine Trail, there were 38 Penistone athletes in action, including an overall win and ten age-category podium finishes. Suzanne McGill led the women’s team in style, finishing as first woman overall in 42-17.
Jade Crosby was first senior woman in 44-17.
In the men’s field, Andrew Heppenstall was third overall and first over40 man (36-27), with Robert Lees first over45 man in 41-18.
Michael Nicholson was first over50 man (47-02) and Jon Bentley added a second over55 man placing with 41-34.
Ashley Firth was third senior man in 38-41. There were also third-placed age category finishes for Ian Neville (over60 man, 44-38), Nick Pepper (over50 man, 48-16), Loida Lopez (over50 woman, 50-25), and Alan Knox (over70 man, 53-49). There were course PBs for Barnsley Harriers Jess Gadsby, Jay West, Sarah Warrilow, Emily Smith, John Mcavinue and Deb Carrington.
Father and son team Shaun and Ricky Curtis completed their first 10k for the club. Rich Spooner and Paula Mills were both second in their respective age categories.
Barnsley AC’s Jack Quigley set a PB of 40-13. Chris McNicholas finished as second over60 man in a time of 43-28.
Penistone’s Jon Hallam and Damian Kilpin took on the Kinder Trog, a notoriously tough fell race held from Hayfield in the Peak District.
The route features more than 15 miles of steep climbs and rugged terrain.
Penistone’s James Pierce took on the Great Lakes Fell Race, a test of endurance through the Lake District mountains. The course spans 21k with 7,000ft of ascent, covering rugged ground and steep climbs in challenging conditions.
Despite ‘choosing the wrong shoes’ and contending with humid conditions, James finished in 4-11-55, securing seventh place in the men’s over50 age category.
Penistone’s Kelvin Bowskill was third over70 man at the Grindleford Fell Race.
Penistone’s Keith Gordon was first over70 man at the Not The Ulley Reservoir Race. Jill Scrivens and Mandy Mallinder also competed.
At June’s Leeds 5k, Barnsley AC’s Brad Walker equalled his PB of 17-05 which he also set at June’s Leeds 5k in 2024.
Harrier Wendy Jeffels completed the Summer Solstice 10k held by Grantham Running Club in 1-06-46 for 339th place.
The second match of the Northern Track League Division East Two took place at Grantham. Barnsley AC finished sixth, leaving them fifth overall after two matches. Chris Gillott took first place in the A races for 800m (1-58-4) and 1500m (4-24.2) and set a PB for second place in the 5000m A race with 16-59.4. Joe Cox was first in both the 800m B race with a PB of 2-13.2 and 1500m B race with 5-00.6.
Chris Ryder competed in the maximum seven events. He did 100m, 200m, 400m, 5000m, shot put, discus and 4x400m relay. Team manager Ray Archer competed in six events including 400m, shot put, discus, hammer, javelin and 4x400m relay.
In the women’s events, Evie Donaldson was second in the 100m A race with 13.4 while Georgia Smith was first in the B race with 13.9.
Amelie Spicer was second over 200m in 27.1 and first in the 400m with 65.5. Daisy Jo Marley ran a PB in 100m hurdles to come second with 19.5.
Helen Morgan also set a PB at 800m to finish first in 2-47.3.
Last Wednesday evening at the Tom Holmes Gala Chase in Oughtibridge, Penistone’s Flynn Rogers won the 3k junior race in 13-28 – more than two minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
In the 6k senior event, Ian Neville finished seventh overall and first place in the men’s over60 category, clocking 26-43. Loida Lopez finished as first over50 woman in 30-33, while John Howsham was second over60 man in 33-40. There was a clean sweep at the top of the over70 men standings, with Stuart Woodhead taking first place (34-56) and Nick Whittingham securing second (38-35).
Rebecca Timms finished in 33-49.
Penistone had several teams competing at the Damflask Relays last week.
The over50 men’s team picked up bronze while the men’s over40 team took silver – just 36 seconds behind winners Hillsborough and Rivelin.
The men’s over50 team consisted of Jonathan Bentley, Martin Ball, Matt Robinson and Tony Wright.
The over40 team was Alan Nutton, Andrew Heppenstall, Richard Cottam and James Mumford.
Barnsley AC had four teams at Damflask. There were only three seconds between the senior men and over40 men who finished 43rd and 44th respectively in times of 1-35-10 and 1-35-13 respectively. The over60 men’s team finished ninth in their category in 1-37-07 while the over35 women were tenth in their category with a time of 1-25-53.
