Barnsley began their pre-season friendlies with a 3-0 win at eighth-tier Emley on Tuesday.
Davis Keillor-Dunn, Robson Woodcock and Neil Farrugia got the goals for Conor Hourihane’s team.
The Reds played a mixture of youngsters and experienced players in both halves as they eased to a routine victory.
Jack Shepherd did not play as, after having surgery at the end of last season, he was not quite ready for a game despite being in training. Max Watters was the same after illness while Jackson Smith, Kacper Łopatą, Georgie Gent and Fabio Jalo are still recovering from injuries from last season. Kyran Lofthouse and Andy Dallas were also not involved.
The visitors took the lead in the 16th minute when Connor Barratt found Adam Phillips with a good pass and the midfielder chipped a fine ball from the right wing to Keillor-Dunn on the left of the box and he beat the goalkeeper.
Jono Bland saw a shot saved from distance after a good run then Keillor Dunn sent a lob just over from 20 yards after Aaron Atkinson found him. Atkinson then shot over after being teed up by Keillor Dunn. Barratt headed just over from a Kieran Graham cross after a scramble in the box. The second goal arrived on 38 minutes from another fine move with Graham’s fine pass picking out left-back Woodcock in the box and he beat the goalkeeper one-on-one.
After ten half-time changes, the second half was more quiet. Corey O’Keeffe shot over from close range after good work by Farrugia and Luke Alker.
Farrugia then curled a fine shot into the top left corner after receiving a pass from Arley Kay - son of ex-Red Antony.
Goalkeeper Kieren Flavell made a good save from a close-range header by ex-Red Emmaisa Nzondo. He then made another good save with his legs after the Reds were opened up.
