A TEENAGE boy from Barnsley is hoping to make his passion for music a career following a successful appearance on television this year - and his performance has left people across the world in awe.

Quinn Plews, 14, has recently appeared on Channel Four’s The Piano where he impressed viewers with his performance at Sheffield Train Station.

He was the second person from Barnsley to star on the show recently, joining Pearl Fawcett-Adriano, who also appeared in Sheffield last year.

His love for the piano, which started at a very young age, has only increased with age - and his mum Zara says he has plans to make a living from the hobby.

She said: “When Quinn was three, my late grandparents bought him a toy piano, and after he started playing it, they suggested that he had proper lessons.

“He’s now been playing for about a decade and has never put it down, he just lives for music.

“He even played the music in church at the funerals of two grandparents, when he was only 12.

“It’ll definitely be his career choice, ideally he wants to be a concert pianist, he’s even started writing and composing his own work.”

Zara says that one of her son’s biggest attributes is his laid back attitude, with popularity sitting very comfortably on his shoulders.

This developed after he featured in a viral video as a nine-year-old, in which he talked about his school day in a broad Yorkshire accent.

She added: “When he went on The Piano, it almost felt like a bigger thing for me, as he was very laid back by it all.

“He just saw it as playing the piano in a train station.

“He just wants to show others the side of music he enjoys I think.

“When he went viral he found it funny, even at nine years old.

“I had people from as far as Australia messaging me, telling me how good the video was, and I think Quinn just liked people being happy as a result of it.

“Quinn’s so proud of where he comes from, he’s Barnsley through and through, and I think the video just puts a stamp on that in a way.

“I think the cute factor was what helped the video do so well, his voice has broke now though so that’s worn off a bit.”

Quinn currently plays music for both Civic Fusion and the Barnsley Concert Band, which is where he found the piece he would eventually play on The Piano.

Zara says that he heard the band play a piece of music, which he eventually re-interpreted for his TV performance.

His future aspirations are to study music at university - which will hopefully lead to a full time career in the music industry.

Zara added: “He’s hoping to study music full time, he just really wants to play the piano and live comfortably.

“I’m not sure if he’s too bothered about fame, he just wants to make a career from playing the piano.”
