A very young Barnsley side lost 3-1 at National League North Buxton on Tuesday night in a friendly.

Kieran Graham got the goal and ‘keeper Rogan Ravenhill saved a penalty.

With the Reds’ first team set to play a behind-closed-doors game in the coming days, this side was mainly under 21s and a host of trialists from that age group.

The trialists are thought to have included Jutorre Burgess, Lewis Gould, Sherquan Toussaint, Yestin Shakespear, Frankie McMahon-Brown and Voldi Mbaya.

Most of them are teenagers from other academies or non-league clubs.

The first team players watched the first half from the stands while Conor Hourihane and his first team staff were in the dug-out.

The hosts took the lead on 14 minutes, with Connor Kirkby – who is originally from Worsbrough Common – firing in from close range after a good run by Luke Brennan down the left wing and into the box.

The hosts could have scored a second against a struggling visitors’ defence but one of their players took a heavy touch in the box then later Kieren Flavell made a good one-on-one save. They found the net again but the offside flag went up.

The Reds levelled on 37 minutes when 17-year-old midfielder Graham robbed a defender of the ball then went clean through and beat the goalkeeper.

The hosts retook the lead just after half-time when substitute Arley Kay lost the ball in his box and an attacker beat Flavell one-on-one.

It was nearly 3-1 but Flavell made a fine save at his near post from a shot on the left of the box. They then shot over from close range after a good move down the right.

Substitute Ravenhill tipped a shot onto the crossbar after Bayley McCann made a mistake in the box. The goalkeeper then impressively saved a penalty after a foul by one of the trialists.

The third goal on 87 minutes saw a long ball into the box down the left not cleared then, after McCann blocked a shot, another was fired in low.
