A WOMBWELL woman described as a ‘true community hero’ has been nominated in this year’s Proud of Barnsley awards for all the work she does in her area.
Lynne Harness, 65, only moved to Wombwell a few years ago but she has taken to the area as if it was her own.
Whether it be litter picking around the area, organising events at St Mary’s Church or supporting children at Netherwood Academy, Lynne has certainly made a name for herself in Wombwell.
She told the Chronicle: “I get places where water doesn’t.
“I do a lot around Wombwell.
“I help run a breakfast at the church which is really well-attended.
“I do litter picking both on my own and with the Wombwell Womblers.
“I keep on top of the Wood Walk area but I also go around and try and keep the Netherwood area clean as well.
“I’m a school governor there.”
Lynne has been nominated in this year’s Community Hero category.
She said: “It’s lovely that I’ve been recognised.
“I’ve lived here for four years after moving from High Hoyland.
“It’s been really easy to become a part of this community.”
Coun James Higginbottom, who represents the Wombwell ward, nominated Lynne in this year’s awards for all her hard work across the area.
He said: “If ever there was a single person who could define the phrase ‘community hero’ it would be Lynne Harness.
“She is an active member of St Mary’s Church congregation regularly organising events, celebrations and activities not only to support the church but the wider community.
“She is a school governor at Netherwood Academy, bringing her extensive experience into the world of education and strengthening the bonds between the school and the community it serves.
“She is a volunteer litter picker working hard to keep the area clean and tidy and a new member of the Wombwell Ward Alliance.
” If all this wasn’t enough to keep Lynne busy, she is also an expert baker, whose delicious creations are a staple at so many community events.
“Thank you Lynne, for your outstanding contribution to community life in Wombwell.”
