Barnsley came from behind twice to draw 2-2 at National League side York City on Tuesday evening in their latest friendly.

In front of 772 of their fans, the Reds levelled through new signing Caylan Vickers then substitute Adam Phillips.

Conor Hourihane made several changes to the 11 for the second of three friendlies in six days, having won 3-0 at League Two Harrogate on Saturday and ahead of a behind-closed-doors game on Friday.

Barnsley almost took the lead in the fourth minute when Reyes Cleary ran onto a goal kick by Murphy Cooper and went clean through but was denied first by the goalkeeper then a clearance off the line.

But it was the hosts who scored in the sixth minute when Ollie Banks, the son of Reds legend Ian, curled a brilliant shot from 25 yards into the top right corner.

It could have been 2-0 soon after but Ollie Pearce headed over from a few yards out after a cross by Joe Felix who was impressively picked out by Banks.

Cleary went clean through again after York lost the ball but, after he appeared to be pulled back in the box, was again denied one on one by goalkeeper Harrison Male.

New signing Caylan Vickers then cut in from the right wing, swapped clever passes with Davis Keillor-Dunn and saw a shot from the edge of the box clawed out of the bottom left corner by Male.

Cooper impressively saved a long-range strike by Tyrese Sinclair who was allowed to run a long way through the Barnsley defence.

Barnsley were then opened up down their right wing by a good move which ended with Alex Hunt’s scuffed effort easily held by Cooper.

Vimal Yoganathan headed over a free-kick by Keillor-Dunn on the stroke of half-time.

The Reds levelled ten minutes after the break. Jon Russell latched onto a loose ball and drove forward before playing through Vickers who beat the goalkeeper one-on-one.

Keillor-Dunn almost put Barnsley in front seconds later but his close-range effort from a Vickers cross was well-saved. Nathanael Ogbeta then ran past a couple of defenders before his shot from the edge of the box hit the base of the right post.

But it was the hosts who went 2-1 up on 71 minutes when Pearce tapped in from close range after a move down the right ended with a low cross.

Substitute Phillips saw a shot saved after a good run by Yoganathan, then York shot across goal and wide after another move down their right.

Phillips levelled on 76 minutes when fellow replacement David McGoldrick put him clean through and, after the initial shot was saved, he tapped in almost on the line.

Farrugia saw a 20-yard shot easily saved then York’s Sinclair clipped the left post with a long-range free-kick.
