THE government has announced that the water system in the UK will be overhauled.

Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley South, welcomed the news that ministers will look at fixing long-held issues with firms responsible for the UK’s water sector.

Residents, the government claim, have been overcharged on their rates while sewage has seeped into river systems.

She said: “For too long, customers have been paying far too much on their water bills, whilst sewage has poured into our rivers and big bosses took huge bonuses.

“This will be a great help for people across Barnsley.

“This Labour government is standing up for working people across the country, bringing the change that they really need.”

When addressing Parliament, she commented on the government investing £104bn of private sector funding to rebuild the water network.

She added: “Upgrading crumbling pipes, repairing leaks, building new sewage treatment works and digging out new reservoirs are part of what we plan.

“This is the most ambitious commitment ever made by any government about water pollution and it’s just the start.”
