Conor Hourihane said he was in a state of shock after Barnsley conceded in the 88th and 93rd minute to draw 2-2 at Wycombe Wanderers.

The Reds looked in control but let in two poor goals and dropped two points.

Head coach Hourihane said: “It’s a sense of shock and disappointment.

“I can’t believe we’ve not won that game of football. We were so comfortable, they didn’t put pressure on us. It’s just absolutely crazy.

“We didn’t play that well, by the way. We played OK and scored two decent goals. I thought we could have done better but didn’t have to do too much to go 2-0 up.

“I told them to be really solid, not give too many chances, clean clearances, centre-backs coming through and heading the ball, full-backs inside. Is it lapse of concentration? Is it other reasons that I’m aware of that I don’t want to say?”

Reyes Cleary scored the first goal and helped to set up the second on his full league debut. Hourihane said: “Reyes was brilliant. He fully deserved his chance to start. In the last couple of cup games he’s been positive and I felt we needed pace. He’s had to be patient and we’ve had to get him fitter and to a place where he understands how we want play. It’s a big step up from Hartlepool in non-league. He’s the one big positive from today.”

Hourihane confirmed Cleary came off with cramp and, although he would have started anyway, the man he replaced David McGoldrick has a groin issue. The head coach said: “I think Reyes would have played regardless but he (McGoldrick) was struggling with a groin issue. That was the reason he didn’t come on.”

On the fans who made the early trip for a lunchtime game, Hourihane said: “They were brilliant. They will be bitterly disappointed like I am. I am hurting. It would have been great to send them away with a win. I am really disappointed for them. We should have been sending them back to Barnsley with three points and there were probably a few of them on the road with five minutes because we were so comfortable.”
