A FORMER Barnsley Woolley Miners CC player could make his debut for Australia against England in the Ashes later this month.
Batter Jake Weatherald spent the summers of 2022 and 2023 at Shaw Lane before being top-scorer in the Sheffield Shield, Australia’s version of the County Championship, last season.
The 31-year-old has been included in the 15-man squad for the first Test which starts on November 21, and has been tipped to open the batting after playing in the middle order for Barnsley.
Weatherald scored more than 2,500 runs in his two seasons in Barnsley with six centuries including 270 in their league record score of 512 at Whiston.
He also helped them win the Yorkshire League South’s Twenty20 Blast in both of his seasons at the club.
