TWO boxers from Barnsley won deal-clinching fights to cement their place on Callum Simpson’s big undercard later this year.
Wombwell’s Jake Jon Cleary and Worsbrough’s Cory Sagar avoided slip ups on a show at the Metrodome on Friday night.
Simpson himself was cheering on the duo ringside.
Cleary took a late opponent change in his stride and piled on the pressure against Hull’s Liam MacMillan.
Southpaw MacMillan posed a different set of problems to what original opponent Luke Thomas would have but Cleary stepped up the pace to see off the man in the away corner.
By the end of the four rounder any counter punching from MacMillan had faded and Cleary was a 40-36 winner in the eyes of judge Mark Lyson.
Cleary will now take on Leeds’s Ellis Ward at the First Direct Arena prior to Simpson’s British, Commonwealth and European super-middleweight title defences against Troy Williamson on December 20.
Sagar too has an association with Simpson as his grandfather John was part of his amateur training team alongside Trevor Schofield at Barnsley Star ABC.
The boxing brickie won 39-37 against Spanish-born debutant Ivan Trofimovich.
Trofimovich, who was born in Barcelona, looks like he will cause problems in the pro game and provided a stern test for Sagar.
Sagar looked most effective when leading off on his jab and built up a healthy lead in the fight whilst looking dangerous when he threw punches in combinations.
The away man finished strongly and won the last round in the view of Lyson.
Other results from the show included Doncaster’s Billy Jarmolinski winning every round confidently against Sydney Chambers.
Halifax’s Joe Garside won 40-36 against Mexican battler Ramiro Garcia Lopez in the show’s opener.
York’s Joel Granger defeated Liverpool first-timer Carl Redmond with a nasty body shot in the third round.
