A LOCAL artist has released an emotional song about his struggles with mental health.
Josh Heppinstall, 37, who is from Royston loves to write and perform music and ‘can’t remember a time’ when he didn’t play music.
The singer-songwriter made the move to London at age 22, where he lived for 13 years.
Here, he worked as a session guitarist and worked with major music producers.
Two years ago, Josh moved back to Barnsley and found himself in a dark place, experiencing severe depression.
At points, Josh expressed a desire to end his life, which was a difficult time for his supportive friends and family.
Recently, the singer was diagnosed with combined ADHD, an illness which can cause inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity - and for which he treats with medication.
Josh’s song ‘Shadow’ is a dialogue on conversations between him an his loved ones, during his darkest moments.
He hopes that the song will shine a light on men’s mental health struggles and contribute towards a culture of men expressing their feelings.
‘Shadow’ is now out on all platforms, alongside a music video on YouTube, filmed by family and edited by Josh himself.
Josh said: “I believe that the opposite of depression is expression so that’s what I’m trying to do.
“The song is about not having to know what’s going on in our minds, just to acknowledge it.
“It’s been a massive barrier to release the song that I’ve had to break through.
“At some points I was just putting it off.
“It’s not the most attractive part of my life and it’s difficult to know that people would see that.”
Josh’s next project is currently under wraps, but will be about something different entirely.
