THE bravery of local wartime heroes has been detailed in a new book.
The heroic actions of 67 men who hailed from Darton, Mapplewell, Woolley and surrounding areas - and died serving their country during World War Two - has been highlighted in Village Heroes, Ian Harley and Melvyn Lunn’s second book, also penned by Don Rhodes.
Their first book, The Holgate 100, examined the lives and deaths of the Barnsley Holgate Grammar School boys - who tragically lost their lives in the same conflict.
The duo’s book sales have already reached over £1,500 for charities associated with the armed forces - all profits from this book will also go towards the same causes.
Copies of Village Heroes are priced at £8.99 and are available from melvynlunn@accountant.com.

Ian said: “Sales of The Holgate 100 have already raised more than £1,500 for armed forces’ charities.
“Its success saw Melvyn and I asked by local historian, Robert Green, to help with similar research in the Darton area.
“We agreed largely because Darton War Memorial does not bear the names of those who fell - and does not help them gain the commemoration they deserve.
“Unfortunately Robert had to pull out before the task got under way.
“The research has not been easy - but with the help of wartime issues of the Barnsley Chronicle - we discovered the names of more than 30 men who should be on the Darton memorial together with several more not recognised on other memorials.
“We hope the public will show their appreciation of our efforts and ensure their sacrifices are remembered by purchasing the book.”
