Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane praised his players’ performance in their 4-1 loss at Liverpool in the FA Cup but said Dominik Szoboszlai showed a lack of respect with his mistake for Adam Phillips’ goal.

The Premier League champions went 2-0 up then Phillips replied before the hosts netted twice more late on.

Hourihane told the Chronicle: “I’m really, really proud.I thought the lads were outstanding to stick in the game until the very, very end.

“Liverpool had to bring on every superstar that they had on the bench to make sure that they got over the line.

“I thought the discipline out of possession, the gameplan that we put together to make it as difficult as possible and the lads did that to a tee.

“We got a little bit tired towards the end obviously and look conceded that third and fourth which I felt like the kind of scoreline we didn't really deserve. I thought overall our lads were outstanding.”

Davis Keillor-Dunn hit the post after less than 30 seconds then Szoboszlai fired in the opener from 30 yards after nine minutes.

“I thought we started the game so, so well.

“I thought they needed an unbelievable strike to kind of settle them down a little bit.

“If that goes in maybe it can turn out to be a little bit different.

“But even with that not going in, I thought the way we handled ourselves, under the lights at Anfield, the hunger and desire that the lads showed to go long spells without the ball. I knew coming into the game that that would happen because they're a top team obviously and we'd have to suffer at times but the lads’ focus and concentration without the ball I thought was at a really, really high level and they've got to take big confidence from that.”

Phillips scored against his former club after Szoboszlai tried to back heel the ball near his goal.

“First and foremost it's such an amazing feeling for, for Adam, you know, scoring in front of the Kop.

“A Liverpool fan who came up through the academy, I thought was outstanding for him, something that he will look back on for so many years of his life and always say that he scored at the Kop End which is something that many people don't do.

“I was a little bit disappointed with their player if I'm honest.

“I thought was a bit disrespectful.

“I don't think he does that against Chelsea. I don't think he does that against Arsenal. I don't think he does that in the Champions League game.

“Unbelievable little feeling and buzz for Adam obviously but a little bit of a lack of respect from their players point of view.”

Reyes Cleary thought he could have had a penalty for a foul by Szoboszlai at 2-1. Hourihane said: “I thought at the time it was a stonewall penalty. Looking back at it now, obviously from the broadcast point of view, seeing it after the game, the player probably does get a little bit of a touch on the ball but at the same time you could see that he's gone into that panic mode.

“Reyes has got across him, he's pulling his shirt a little bit and it was easily a decision that could have went that way.

“I thought it was a big moment in the game. 2-1 around the 65th minute, and you never know what can happen after that.

“It was a big decision that just didn't quite go for us.”

Barnsley were clapped off by their 6,000 fans.

Hourihane said: “It gives everyone that buzz, that energy, you know that there's that connection between fans and players.

“They were so proud of the lads’ efforts tonight.

“I was and we deservedly got clapped off by them.

“They can all go home tonight with that energy that they've got a group of players here that are willing to do anything to get results.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said: “They can be proud of themselves, how difficult they made it for us. They always play a 4-3-3 but decided to go with five which I can completely understand and I would have done if I was their manager. But compliments to their gameplan, desire and willingness to fight.”
