A CARING young teaching assistant has been nominated for a Young Champions award.

Despite being only 20 years old, Isobel Mellor-Keating’s care and devotion to one of her pupils goes beyond her years.

The Royston resident works full-time at Greenacre School as a teaching assistant, caring for youngsters who have additional needs.

Isobel’s duties go above and beyond her day job, working as a PA/carer for one of her pupils - whose grateful mum has nominated her for the award.

Nine-year-old Thomas Paterson has been lucky enough to have had Isobel supporting him after work and at weekends - since October 2024.

Thomas’ complex needs encompass a chromosome disorder, congenital heart disease and autism.

He needs help will all aspects of personal care, day and night and Isobel has always been by his side to provide support.

Isobel takes Thomas on regular trips to parks, soft play and to eat dinner - going above and beyond to understand the youngster’s needs, likes and dislikes.

Being non-verbal, Thomas is prone to displaying challenging behaviours that are borne out of a frustration from communication barriers.

Isobel has taken an unconditionally supportive approach to Thomas’ needs, seeing this as something to work with instead of a negative.

Thomas’ brother also has the same complex needs and a younger sister who has recently started school.

Isobel’s unwavering love for Thomas, whilst juggling her full-time position, has made a world of difference to both Thomas and his family.

Rachel Paterson, Thomas’ mum has nothing but praise for the ‘truly amazing’ teenager’s caring attitude.

She said: “She goes over and above what’s expected.

“She treats Thomas like he’s her own.

“She loves him and cares for him and looks at what he can achieve.

“I’m very lucky to have found her.”
