Some Barnsley FC stories coming out of the weekend.
REDS WAIT ON INTERNATIONAL CALL-UPS
BARNSLEY are waiting to hear which of their players will be called by up their countries in the upcoming international break.
If they have three regular first team players selected, they can choose to call off their trip to Northampton Town on March 28 which would then probably be moved to April 28.
Owen Goodman is thought to have a chance of a call-up for Canada who are due to host Iceland on March 28 and Tunisia three days later in friendlies ahead of the summer’s World Cup which they will host along with Mexico and the USA. Goalkeeper Goodman has never played for Canada but was in the last squad in November.
Patrick Kelly, assuming he returns from injury at the end of this week as expected, is likely to be called up by Northern Ireland either for the senior team or under 21s. The senior side – for whom Kelly made his debut in November – visit Italy in a World Cup play-off on March 26, with the winner playing one more match to try to reach the tournament.
Jono Bland and Vimal Yoganathan have been in previous Wales under 21s squads while Tawanda Chirewa has been a regular with Zimbabwe but is currently injured and not expected to play for the Reds until after the international break.
GOALS FOR LOANED STRIKERS
Two loaned-out Barnsley strikers scored for National League clubs on Saturday.
Leo Farrell came off the bench to net twice for loan club Scunthorpe United in their 3-0 win at Yeovil Town. The 20-year-old is on loan for 28 days.
Andy Dallas netted for Southend in their 2-2 draw at Carlisle. He now has 11 goals for Southend who are a place outside the play-offs.
YOGANATHAN PLEASED WITH ‘INSTINCT’ GOAL
Vimal Yoganathan says his goal in the 2-1 win over Exeter City on Saturday was ‘just instinct.’
The midfielder headed in the Reds’ second goal, finding the top right corner from about 12 yards. It was his fifth goal for the Reds but first in the league at Oakwell having bagged a brace in the EFL Trophy last season before netting at Doncaster and Stockport in November.
He told the Chronicle: “It was just instinct. I had a couple of headers earlier in the season. It was getting it on target and hoping for the best. Obviously it landed in the corner.”
On the game in general, Vimal said: “I thought we played well as a team. We dug it out at the end when it got tough which shows a lot of character. It’s three points and hopefully we can kick on.”
U18S 2 POINTS OFF TOP AFTER 4-0 WIN
BARNSLEY under 18s are just two points off top in their league after a 4-0 win at home to Hull City on Saturday.
Noah Town, Robson Woodcock, Josh Heyes and trialist Franklin Middleton netted for Nicky Eaden’s side who have won their last two games 4-0.
They are currently fifth but just two points off leaders Crewe with two games in hand. They have eight games remaining starting at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday.
Barnsley under 18s have a strong recent history in the Professional Development League, winning it in 2023 then finishing second the next year before coming sixth last season.
Barnsley under 21s won 1-0 at home to Crewe on Friday with a trialist scoring. They are due to visit Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.
