There were more than 1,000 people at a Penistone Church home game for the first time ever on Saturday as they finished their Premier Division season with a 1-0 win over high-flying Sheffield.

There was a ‘pay what you want’ admittance policy and a day of events including youth team games in the build-up.

James Young scored a first half penalty, in his 348th and final NCEL game for the club, to settle the match attended by 1,007 fans.

The result ended a six-match winless run for Church who finished 13th, six places and five points above the relegation zone.

It is their lowest finishing position and points tally ever at the level.

Relegated Wombwell Town finished their season with a 3-1 loss at Barton Town. Liam Owen scored for Town who went winless in 31 league games since September and finished 21 points adrift in last place.
