Hundreds of Barnsley's unsung heroes turned out to be honoured in the inaugural Proud of Barnsley awards.

The Chronicle-run campaign has seen more than 300 people and groups nominated, with many being honouring at a glittering awards night on Wednesday.

Over the last five months, Chronicle readers have been urged to nominate volunteers, charity workers, carers, community groups, young apprentices and good neighbours who make Barnsley the special place it is.

Former Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly and radio DJ Guy Harris hosted the evening at The Holiday Inn, Dodworth.

Award-winning Katherine, best known for her role as feisty Becky McDonald, said she was proud to hail from the town and admitted that she didn't get chance to return as often as she would like.

She told the 250 guests: “We have had such a huge amount of nominations and it's been a hard job for the panel to choose winners.

“I know there have been some sleepless nights for the likes of judge Milly Johnson. So congratulations to the 300-plus people who have been nominated.”

The awards were backed by many local businesses and organisations, with national breakdown assistance firm, Road to Recovery, run by local man Paul Hoyle, as main sponsor.
