BARNSLEY Hospice will provide more comfort and support for patients living with life-limiting illnesses thanks to a £10,000 grant.

The funding will enable the Gawber-based hospice to purchase a new bariatric bed for its inpatient unit.

The bed can also be used as a ‘cuddle bed’ offering patients the chance to be physically close to loved ones.

The Hospital Saturday Fund supports all kinds of medically associated charities throughout the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and Malta each year.

Its latest grant will support Barnsley Hospice’s ongoing commitment to providing specialist palliative and end-of-life care to local people.

Standard hospital beds are unsafe for bariatric patients who have a high body mass index (BMI) or larger than average body measurements.

In the past, the hospice has had to borrow bariatric equipment on a short-term basis to meet the needs of these patients.

Charlie Straw, grants and major donor manager at the hospice, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Hospital Saturday Fund for their support.
