A SURVEY has been launched for visitors to have their say on plans to reopen a reservoir’s once-popular activity centre.
Scout Dike in Penistone operated for decades with youngsters from schools across the borough and beyond using it for residential trips.
It shut in 2000 but Kingswood took on the site in 2006 on a lease by the council but, after the company went into administration, the asset was handed back to Barnsley Council.
It has been unused for almost two years but a campaign has now been launched by Nick Stubbs and Darren Padgett who have formed a community interest company to have the site listed as a community asset.
A survey went online this week and visitors have been encouraged to have their say.
“The well-used and well-loved outdoor centre has been sat empty and closed for almost two years,” a statement said.
“This has had a huge effect on many schoolchildren, charitable groups and the local community it served.
“We have set up a CIC one where the profits get fed back into the community and are taking on the challenge of bringing Scout Dike back to life.
“Bigger and better, with even more on offer, including the potential for international exchanges.
“To be in with a chance, and compete with any private investors, we need to prove that the communities we will serve want this reopened for the benefit of the public, rather than for private development.”
